offering its cloud-based Quickoffice app for iOS and
Android – which was previously being sold for $14.99 at both the App
Store and Play Store – completely free of cost. The app enables you to
access Office documents straight from your mobile device, and allows
editing Word files, Excel spreadsheets, and PowerPoint presentations, as
well as uploading these files to your Google Drive account.
The news comes after Apple made its iWork apps free for all users who are buying new Apple iDevices. Clearly a counterattack by Google against their strategy, and one with additional benefits. The app has no device-restrictions to speak of, looks pretty fantastic and comes packaged with loads of useful features including an extra 10GB worth of Google Drive space. Quickoffice boasts a simple and clean interface. To get started, you need to sign in with your Google Account. After it’s done linking your account, the app brings up its home screen from where you can navigate to recently accessed documents, Google Drive, documents that have been shared with you by others, and your starred items. You can, of course, also access the files that are stored locally on your phone or tablet.
When it comes to file format support, Quickoffice is allows viewing a large sum of extensions and editing XLS, PPTX, DOCX, and PDF files. The editing workspace is also quite intuitive and user-friendly. During testing, we tried opening a handful of MS Office files and all of them rendered flawlessly.
You will also appreciate its different editing tools, along with the basic options to copy, cut and paste text items, as well as attach images that are saved locally on your device. You can even capture a new photo with your device’s camera and link it straightaway. All the zooming in and out of the document surface is done by the pinch-to-zoom gesture, while a long-press brings in more settings including an option to change input method and narration via text-to-speech.
With this update, Google has effectively taken away any reason for buying expensive mobile Office suites for editing and opening documents files.
